Another resolution...

Back in August (on my birthday), I also made a set of "New-Years-like" resolutions for my 28th year. Many of them are personal but the one that may take the most time was that I resolved to read 50 books before turning 29. These would be books of my choice, and ones that I had not read previously.

Now, maybe it was my birthday margaritas talking at the time, but when I got back from Spain and really sat down and thought about my resolution, I realized I was a bit crazy!

50 books in a year means one a week more or less, which is lofty, especially considering that one can't feasibly take the time to sit and read every week consistently. Or, at least, I can't.

Compound this with the fact that I made a good friend at work and she and I began to ride the train an hour (or more) each way, which meant that I was enjoying conversation two + hours a day and my reading time went out the window.

That said, I am now nearly done with my 15th book since August 25th. The book is amazing - "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah. It's a true story/memoire of a young boy growing up in Sierra Leone in the 1990's who is separated from his family and made to be a soldier. That's all I will say for now but I highly recommend the book.

So, this is where you come in - are there any "must read" books that you can suggest? Perhaps I should list what I have read so far this year in another entry. At this rate, I have to read 35 more books in the next 34 weeks to meet my goal. INSANITY!!!!!!

Eat Pray Love is absolutely fantastic. Another memoir, really well written. You will totally finish the books -- you are a quick reader!

I've heard about that one and you always seem to know the best books!!

I have Kite Runner from the American Library that's next on my list (which I remember you reading) but I should see if they have Eat Pray Love next. :)

I owe you an email....

The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera is still my favorite and I hope that you'd enjoy it too. It's a bit heavy at first, but it totally speaks to me. And, it was originally written in French before being translated into Czech and English!

Try it out :)

Sex Drugs and Cocoa puffs by Chuck Closterman. It is a cheeky, fun, easy read, but v. insightful and smartly written. Perfect for kids who grew up in the 80s

Ditto on Eat Pray Love which I am currently reading and enjoying.

Thanks all!!

Eat Pray Love is now on my library hold list but sadly there are four holds before me so it may take a while.

Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs sounds so good and Mere, you have been talking about that book for 1,000,000 years so it's high time I read it!

I am going to post my list and keep you all posted on my progress because that way I'm accountable!

Thanks!!!

Miss you all!

triple-ditto on Eat Pray Love. i just about quit my job over that book.

i'd also suggest: the alchemist (paolo coelho), the tao of pooh, and the te of piglet (benjamin huff). all three are very quick reads, and all in the same vain, philosophically (though pooh is easier to get through than piglet).

I just remembered...Sammy's Hill is a hilarious book (total chic lit) for those of us political junkies. It's about a twenty-something who works on Capitol Hill.
