While walking around and exploring this afternoon/evening, I came across a sign that made me laugh out loud...posted right in front of a public pool was this sign, explaining that bathing suits are required. I didn't realize at first that it meant no boardshorts or baggy swim trunks allowed - basically speedos only. I had a good chuckle for a minute wondering if people really needed to be told that they had to wear bathing suits to the pool!
But the real question is....why no swim trunks???? Anyone?

Ah yes the speedo requirement in France, also known as the reason I do not go swimming in public pools in France (you will never get me in a speedo). The belief is that board shorts or other loose firing swimwear allow more ummm stuff to comingle with the pool water. Whereas speedos form an impervious seal that no particulate can pass through, thus minimizing any health risks. At this point I will refrain from discussing anything I learned in my classes on small particles (not kidding I really took a class all about dust and smaller sized particulate), and not mention that any garment only really protects us from embarassment and protect very little once we jump in water.

Don't they put chlorine in their pools?
They only allow Speedos since with the baggy trunks people (males) were wearing bermudas and other ordinary street clothes and claiming they were swim suits.
To expand on the last commenter's post, I think it's because other types of trunks can be worn for other purposes, and thus could introduce sweat and dirt into the pool. Presumably no one's wearing those Speedos anywhere but the pool.
